Ditch the Ketchup and Mustard
Have you ever tried putting ranch on a burger? Trust me, it’s *way* more exciting than boring old ketchup and mustard! Let me tell you all about this recipe.
- You only need 30 minutes. We’re all about quick dinners around here. Once you’ve prepped your ingredients, you only need 10 minutes of cook time to get these burgers on the table!
- It uses simple spices and ingredients. There’s nothing fancy about this recipe. Well, except for arugula. You probably have everything else on hand already.
- You can make these burgers on a grill or stove top. See the “Tips and FAQs” section below for more info, and check out my How to Grill Burgers post for some helpful grilling tricks.
Key Ingredients for Ranch Burgers
- Ground beef. There’s nothing quite like a hearty beef burger! Choose a fattier beef (80/20 is ideal) for a juicier burger.
- All the seasonings. We'll add salt, pepper, parsley, garlic, dill, and onion powder to the burger mixture to give them that zesty, herby ranch flavor.
- CHEESE. I prefer cheddar or colby jack cheese for this recipe, but if you’d rather have Swiss cheese, check out these Caramelized Onion Mushroom Swiss Burgers.
- Brioche buns. You can use whatever buns you want, but I prefer soft and fluffy brioche buns for this recipe.
- Ranch dressing. The true star of the show! Once your burgers are done cooking, drizzle on some ranch and let your taste buds do the rest.
How to Make Burgers with Ranch Dressing
Burgers are one of the easiest meals to make, but there are a few tricks to keeping them nice and juicy! Just remember to:
- Handle the meat as little as possible.
- Gently form balls then press into patties.
- Leave an indent in the center to prevent an overly domed burger.
- Do NOT press them with a spatula while cooking, ever ever. Don't do it.
Here are the full instructions for preparing the burgers on the grill. Tips for stove top or air fryer cooking are below.
- Oil the grill grates.
- Preheat the grill to high heat (500 degrees).
- Combine the beef, salt, pepper, parsley, garlic powder, dill, and onion powder in a large bowl.
- Shape burgers into four round balls and place them on a cutting board or baking sheet.
- Gently smash the burgers down with the palm of your hand, so they’re about ½ inch thick.
- Use your thumb to place an indent in the center of each burger.
- Grill the burgers for about 4 minutes or until they have a nice sear on the first side. Flip over and continue to grill another 4-5 minutes or until cooked through.
- Place a cheese slice on each burger for the last minute of cooking time or immediately after removing from the grill.
- Place the burgers on the buns and pile with sliced radishes, cucumber, tomato, arugula. Drizzle with ranch dressing.
Tips & FAQs
Toppings for Ranch Burgers
Classic burger toppings like lettuce, tomato, and onion work fine for this recipe, but I love mixing it up with other veggies. Crisp, cool veggies are the perfect foil for a juicy, hearty hamburger. And topping it off with ranch dressing is like having a little mini-salad on your burger! Here are a few of our favorite non-traditional toppings:
- Sliced cucumbers
- Sliced radish
- Shredded carrots
- Sprouts
- Arugula
If you wanted to make these healthier, you could also ditch the bun and turn them into the salad. Just increase all of your toppings for the salad base, then top it with cut up burger and ranch dressing! You can check out this Big Mac Salad for inspiration.
Can you use a ranch seasoning packet in this recipe?
I tested these burgers with a ranch dressing flavor packet, and it didn’t give the meat enough of that zesty, herby ranch flavor I was going for. The buttermilk powder in the packets muddies the other flavors. For the best, brightest flavor I recommend using a blend of dried herbs and garlic instead.
Can you make burgers on the stove top instead of a grill?
Definitely! I prefer using a cast iron skillet to cook burgers on the stove. Heat the skillet over medium high heat. Add the patties and cook until browned on the bottom, about 4-5 minutes. Flip over, and cook an additional 3-4 minutes or until they reach an internal temperature of 155-160 degrees. A meat thermometer works great for this! Add the cheese for the last 2 minutes of cooking.
Can you make burgers in the air fryer instead of the grill?
Absolutely. In fact, I LOVE cooking burgers in the air fryer. For complete instructions, visit this Air Fryer Burgers post!
